Australian Campaign

SIGTUR is supporting the campaign of the Australian Trade Union movement against anti-worker legislation imposed by the Howard Government.

Having recently won control of both Houses of Parliament in Australia the right wing government implemented legislative changes designed to undermine or stop the influence of unions in the Australian workplace. For over one hundred years there has been some form of balance in Australian workplaces. This balance has been removed.

Australian workers now have little protection from unscrupulous employers. They may be required to sign individual contracts before they commence work that cut existing wages and conditions...sadly for many workers this has already happened.

In an ironic twist the Government named these anti-worker/anti-union laws..."Work Choices". Choices are either "take it or leave it"...

SIGTUR participants have campaigned to support their Australian comrades. In the Philiippines this support even resulted in some protesters being assaulted by the police. Such courage in support of fellow workers is so typical of the day to day struggle waged by workers across the globe.

The General Secretary of the Centre Of Indian Trade Unions, Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar is pictured below with Australian delegation leader Jim Murie after making a formal presentation to the Australian Government representative. Thai delegates organised the protest rally in Bangkok. SIGTUR participants from Nepal, Thailand, South Korea, Australia, Pakistan. Brazil, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and the Philippines participated in a strong display of International Solidarity.
