SIGTUR deeply mourns the passing away of Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar, General Secretary of the CITU. He died in Kolkatta, India on 20th February 2007 after a prolonged illness. He was 71. He leaves behind his wife Sabitri Majumdar and daughter Barshana Majumdar.
A Trade Union organiserof the highest calibre, Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar was deeply involved in Indian unionism from 1966, in AITUC and in the CITU from their formation in 1970.
Comrade Chittabrata Majumdar was elected All India General Secretary of CITU at the 11thAll India Conference held in Chennai in 2003 and was re-elected in the recently held 12th Conference at Bangalore in 2007.
Comrade Majumdar struggled for change within the union movement to meet and defeat imperialist and anti-worker forces. He was a passionate advocate for worker solidarity within India and throughout the world. To this end, he devoted much energy and time to involvement with SIGTUR and work in building international solidarity of the working class.
At the time of his death he was a member of the Indian National Parliament, having previously served as a minister in his home state of Bengal. He was a committed communist, worked tirelessly for the good of the working class and always lead a humble lifestyle. He has been asource of inspiration for many and will be sadly missed.
