SIGTUR KOCHI Conference a big success

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions(CITU) did a wonderful job in hosting the 2008 SIGTUR Conference, recently held in Kochi, in the state of Kerala in India. Conference was held from 19th -23rd April 2008.

 Nations from the "Economic South" participated. This included Brazil, South Africa, Thailand, East Timor, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Australia, Nepal, Burma, Cambodia. Observors representing Iraq, Vietnam, Mexico, Cyprus and Japan were also in attendance.

Delegates were quickly put to work in a series of comprehensive workshops seeking strategies to address difficult issues facing workers in all nations.

Please check out the HISTORY section for the Conference Report, Action Statement and Commission Reports. Here the comprehensive report on the outcomes of the conference are posted. While the days were long and discussions often went long into the evening, it was not all hard work.

The CITU also arranged a wonderful cultural program to introduce delegates to Indian dance and music.

The SIGTUR network is an important forum for activists to unite against the worst excesses of neo-liberal globalisation. This conference will act as a catalyst for improving our capacity to act collectively.
