Page 1 of 3 A NARRATIVE REPORT 7TH REGIONAL CONGRESS OF SIGTUR, BANGKOK, JUNE 2005
INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS:
From Monday 26th June to Friday 1st of July 2005, one hundred and twenty delegates from twenty three democratic union federations from eleven countries in the south participated in the Congress. This meeting would not have been possible but for the solidarity of participating unions and the assistance of progressive organisations from civil society who are all collectively seeking to make the world a fairer and more just place. To all those who support and work for these principles, we salute you.
Arokia Dass and his team of workers from Bangkok organised the 2005
SIGTUR Congress magnificently. Everything ran smoothly; the venue was
ideal; and the spirit that developed was inspiring. This report
reflects SIGTUR’s recent contribution to building a strong civil
society movement. It assesses what was achieved in Bangkok; w
hat were the practical outcomes; and examines some of the challenges
that lie ahead, not only for SIGTUR, but for all agencies striving for
a just social and economic order. We seek to place the value of persons
and communities ahead of narrow profit driven corporations, those who
all too often display a commitment only to shareholders.
The report is structured as follows:
- Summary of the discussions, debates and events;
- The Action Statement;
- The Implementation strategy.
